Portland is known as "The Rose City" for good reason. Some of the most beautiful roses in the world are grown here.
The combination of temperate weather and moist air provides a climate well suited for growing everything from flowers to wine grapes. Often, the greenery of the area is linked, incorrectly, to heavy rainfall. Although the Northwest is known for wet weather, Portland's average rainfall is less than Seattle's and during the summer months is significantly lower than the national average. |

No tour of the city would be complete without a visit to the International Rose Test Gardens located in Washington Park.
Washington Park is a beautiful 700 acre sanctuary. Located just 5 minutes from Downtown Portland, it boasts a spectacular view of the city skyline. It's important to remember that Washington Park is really a park of parks rather than a single attraction. |

The Rose Gardens include thousands of varieties of roses. Literally every bush is a plant like no other.
Music concerts and theatrical plays are held in the garden's amphitheater during the summer, and visitors can often observe wedding ceremonies among the roses. |
|
Across from the Rose Gardens (but still within Washington Park), the Japanese Gardens present traditional Japanese gardening techniques complemented by sand sculpture gardens and an authentic Japanese teahouse.
Visitors can attend tea ceremonies in the teahouse or simply spend a peaceful afternoon strolling or meditating through the gardens. A special tram offers visitors a comfortable way to arrive at the garden's hilltop perch. |
